Mandart Chan (he/him/il) was born & raised as a visitor on the lands of the Musqueam people, also known as Richmond, BC. After graduating from École Hugh McRoberts Secondary School, he embarked on his educational journey at the University of Victoria, where he completed a Bachelor's degree in Music & Secondary Education. He has also completed a Master of Music Performance (Conducting) degree from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University and is completing his first year of the Master of Professional Education program in Equity, Diversity, and Social Justice with the University of Western Ontario.

 

His career as a teacher brought him to the Calgary Board of Education (in Calgary, AB) where he taught Junior High (Gr 7-9) Music & Drama. Mandart’s teacher journey led him back to Victoria, where he taught for 14 years at École Belmont Secondary School in the Sooke School District. In addition to teaching music, Mandart also taught Social Justice and Careers, which have become passions in his life. Mandart is now an Education Officer with the BC Ministry of Education & Child Care, where he is able to bring his experience from practice into policy. Mandart led the development team for the Anti-Racism Education in BC : A Teachers’ Guide, which will be released in early 2023.

 

Volunteerism, Social Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Community are the main pillars of Mandart’s life. As a gay, cis-gender, Chinese male, he understands that all voices, including his own, are important and deserve to be heard. He has held the position of President with the BC Music Educators’ Association and currently serves as the Secretary with both the Canadian Music Educators’ Association and the Victoria Pride Society. Mandart lives on the lands of the Lekwungen People, also known as Victoria BC with his partner Jason and their dogs Tikka & Masala.
