For Immediate Release

get-attachment-3.aspx.jpegSelmer Paris saxophone artist Javon Jackson continues the great tradition of teaching at the University level.  Starting this August, he will be the Associate Professor of Jazz and Chair of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz.  He will serve as the educational and administrative leader for the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz.  Duties include: teaching, ensembles, recruitment / development efforts and representing the Institute and The Hartt School both internally and externally.  The Hartt School is a comprehensive performing arts conservatory of the University of Hartford that offers innovative degree programs in music, dance, and theatre.

Javon Jackson shared how thrilled he is with us.  He said, “I am excited and honored to work alongside an incredible faculty and student body at the University of Hartford in the hopes of continuing the vision and passion established by friend and mentor, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean.”

Jackie McLean joined the Hartt faculty in 1968.  During his tenure, McLean developed Hartt’s African American Music Department, and in 2000 it was renamed in his honor. Through distinguished faculty, the Institute trains young musicians to perform at the highest levels of accomplishment in the tradition of the Hard Bop era and beyond.

Jackson was a natural selection for this prestigious position as he is an icon for the new generation of musicians that blend traditional sounds with neo-jazz.  Jackson has released 14 recordings as a band leader and recorded more than 135 CDs with other great jazz artists including Elvin Jones, Ben E. King,  Freddie Hubbard, Charlie Haden, Betty Carter, Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, Donald Byrd and Dr. Lonnie Smith, only to name a few.
