Artist's BiographyMarty Barrett began playing Baritone Horn when, in high school, his new braces made getting notes out of a trumpet impossible. But the resonance and versatility of the new horn"which could switch easily from leads to rhythm parts"made it a better fit for the performer, who turned in his beloved instrument promptly after high school graduation and didn\'t pick up another low brass mouth axe for 20 years.
In 2007, Barrett and collaborator Brian Descheneaux were producing the rock opera \"All That Jaws\" in Hollywood when it came time to record a horn section. On a whim, Barrett rented an ancient and battered King Baritone Horn and, multiple-tracking with an equally aged trombone, quickly added the brass parts, marveling how the Baritone Horn in particular added some real heft to the music.
During the course of \"All That Jaws,\" Barrett and Descheneaux formed Fogelfoot, America\'s Only Alternative History Band, writing \"the songs that sensitive singer/songwriters of the 70\'s would have written had they been the ones trashing hotel rooms and eating bat heads.\"
The use of the Baritone Horn in a rock setting was a revelation, both as a hard-hitting solo and harmony instrument as well as a sonically interesting adjunct to the drums and bass. Audiences respond to the horn with confusion and joy. Fogelfoot is a staple in the L.A. rock scene and has played around the country.
Barrett also plays in brass quartets and teaches workshops on his rediscovered instrument in schools around Los Angeles.
