Billy has been playing professionally for 20+ years all over the United States, the Caribbean, and in Europe. From 1988-1991, Billy attended The University of Southern Mississippi, where he was in just about every musical ensemble on campus with a trombone in it- including the award winning USM trombone group The Hub Bones. While studying with Dr. Marta Hofacre, he had the opportunity to perform in masterclasses with such players as Christian Lindberg, Carsten Svanberg, Ian McDougall, Steve Turre, David Taylor, Slide Hampton, Steve Weist, and many others. In 1991, Billy was also a finalist for the position of Lead Trombone in the prestigious Air Force Airmen Of Note.
From 1992-1995, Billy studied Jazz Trombone at The University of North Florida, working with John Moak, Paul Weikle, Keith Oshiro, Scott Whitfield, and Marc Dickman, and played lead and solo trombone in the award-winning UNF Jazz Ensemble I. Another bevy of great artists came through UNF- Diane Schuur, Diane Reeves, Don Menza, Arturo Sandoval, Joe Henderson, Marvin Stamm, and others. While at UNF, Billy worked extensively at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios- Lead Trombone in the Disneyland All-American College Band in 1993, Trombone/leader of the Walt Disney World Summer Kids of the Kingdom Band in 1994, and Assistant Director of the Walt Disney World All-American College Jazz Band in 1995. In addition, from 1992-1994 Billy played in the Walt Disney World Very Merry Christmas Parade, and in the WDW Christmas Brass- an 18 piece group made up of the best collegiate brass in the state of Florida, playing 4-5 sets of energetic Christmas music in the Magic Kingdom through the holiday season.
After Graduating from UNF in 1995, Billy joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, led by the great trombonist Buddy Morrow, for a tour of the Eastern US. Billy then returned to Disney in 1996, performing nightly with a 10 piece high energy show band, Champagne, at the Atlantic Dance Hall in Disney's Boardwalk Resort. Champagne performed a variety of music, from 90s pop to big band swing favorites. That band then left Disney, went to New Orleans for a time, then to Denver, CO, where the band performed at the Supreme Court lounge for 10 weeks under the name Presumed Guilty.
After Denver, Billy worked for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines on 3 ships- The Splendour of the Seas, The Majesty of the Seas, and the Monarch of the Seas, in the Eastern and Western Caribbean. The weekly ship’s entertainment schedule included variety shows, special guest artists such as Bowser from Sha Na Na, Clint Holmes, Herb Reed and the Platters, small jazz combo work, playing for the Captain’s Dinner, and various small ensemble functions for special occasions.
From 1998 to 2002, Billy returned to New Orleans to play with John Wehner's Dream Band at The Famous Door... a high energy show band, the Dream Band featured the Dream Band Horns, and played 3-4 sets a night, 5 nights a week, nearly every week, playing the music of Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, Tower Of Power, and many others. The band then moved to Destin, FL for another 2 years at the Sandestin Resort, at John Wehner’s Village Door.
Billy now lives in Huntsville, AL, is the instructor of trombone and Jazz trombone at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, has a large studio of private students, does music clinics for local schools, and plays in the Huntsville Symphony, the Brass Band of Huntsville, The Redstone Brass Choir, the Tuscaloosa Horns (with such artists as The Temptations, The Four Tops, The O'Jays, Bobby Vinton, Wayne Newton, Natalie Cole and others), Rolling Jazz Revue, The Atlanta Jazz Orchestra, Mambo Gris Gris, The Rocket City Jazz Orchestra, The Moondust Big Band, Huntsville Community Chorus, The Neons, and others.
