Elkhart, IN— Sept. 30, 2016—Conn-Selmer, Inc. announces Walt Straiton to their Division of Education as Educational Support Manager for the East Region. Residing in Williamsport, PA, Walt brings over 25 years of knowledge and experience as a distinguished conductor and music educator.
Before joining the education team at Conn-Selmer, Walt managed the “Music in Education” system for Yamaha Corporation of America’s Keyboard Division; and prior to this served as Director of Orchestras and Assistant Director of Marching Bands at Williamsport Area High School in PA. Mr. Straiton is a recipient of the coveted John F. Kennedy Center Fellowship for Teachers in the Arts, as well as a finalist for “Teacher of the Year” in the nationally-televised Walt Disney Corporation’s “American Teacher Awards.”
A professional saxophonist, violinist, and jazz pianist, Walt has been recognized as a national leader in the movement to bring both standard and contemporary jazz repertoire to the American symphony orchestra. Published articles to his credit include comprehensive orchestral program development, conducting, and music technology; which have appeared in the Jazz Education Journal, American String Teachers Journal, and the Technology Institute for Music Education. A graduate of Millersville University (PA) and the Eastman School of Music, Walt has also pursued coursework toward a Doctorate in Music Education at Pennsylvania State University.
